What Web Design Company should You choose?

The web design company that you choose to go with can greatly impact the success of your website project. Choosing the wrong web design company can end up leaving you with a failed project, an empty pocket book and a huge headache. How can you be sure that the company you choose is going to be a good fit for your company?

First and foremost, I'd want to know how long a company has been in business. More years suggests more stability. It also gives you the advantage of giving you access to a larger portfolio of their work for you to examine. This isn't the be all and end all though. Just because a company has been in business for a while doesn't mean it is financially stable. It suggests it though. Most people can't afford to continue working as a web designer if they aren't making any money at it.

Make sure you get some design comps done before you agree to the full work. A design comp is a mock up of what your website could look like. Ask for two or three design comps. Be aware though that not every company will be willing to do this for you for free. Even if you have to pay a fee for them to do some design comps, if they can't give you a design you're happy with, you will have spent very little to discover this.

Make sure to check your intuition. When you meet with your web designer or make contact with them over the phone, be sure to be aware of how the person makes you feel. Do you trust them? Do they project a professionalism that makes you feel like they can do the job? If you don't have peace here, walk away. Look for another web designer.

Carefully examine their portfolio. Do you find websites in their portfolio that you like? Are you satisfied with the professionalism of the web sites they create? If you can't find websites you like, how can you expect them to create a website you like?

How well do the websites they create rank in the search engines? Does the web designer help you promote your website? Do they offer it as an extra service? If they don't, consider the possibility that they can't build websites that are search engine friendly or at best don't consider search engines when designing their sites.

Overall, if the web design company is professional, competent, has a good portfolio and offers you good customer service up front, your chances of getting a website you like goes up exponentially.
