Getting Listed in Google in 30 days or less
By John Parson

As a web designer I've gotten asked on a number of occasions the secret to getting listed in Google quickly. There are many theories out there as to what will get them listed fast but most are not based in today's reality. In fact, some of the techniques people mention to me are downright dated, old or simply untrue.

So this brings us back to our original question. Is getting listed in Google possible for the average person? Absolutely. It really doesn't have to be complicated either. The absolute simplest way to get listed in Google is to get your website linked from another website that Google thinks is important. Nothing complicated but also not necessarily completely simple either.

Google ranks websites based on a complex number of factors but one that they have used since the beginning and continue to use today is links from what they think are important sites to determine how to rank or even whether to rank another website. This term is often referred to as Pagerank. Pagerank is Google's name for the algorithm they use to determine how important other people on the internet think that a particular site is to meet their information needs. The more quality sites link to a particular site on a particular topic, the more likely that the site is worth ranking in their listings and the more worthy a website is to get a visit from Google.

The simplest way to get a link to your site is to submit your site to the thousands of directories out there. The best way is to get a link from a site with some Pagerank, preferably on topic to your website. In order to get quality links from other websites pointing to yours, you should concentrate on providing good quality content. People don't put links on their websites to other websites that are simply junk or uninteresting.

Whatever you do though, avoid the temptation to purchase links simply to get Pagerank. If Google doesn't catch you are the other site owner, it may work, but it is against Google's terms and services and if they catch you, they'll potentially take you out of their listings entirely. In my opinion, not a risk worth taking.
